An RSI Organization is the official persistent community layer; it is distinct from an in-game party.
The directory is crowded - the RSI orgs listing currently returns over 92,000 registered organizations - so a new org competes for attention against a very large field.
The creation form is more constrained than people expect: six archetypes, a maximum of two activity tags, three commitment levels and a single exclusive/non-exclusive switch. Those five choices are most of what a stranger sees.
Ranks are cosmetic and grant no rights; only the four roles (Owner, Recruitment, Officer, Marketing) grant actual permissions.
Joining provides social infrastructure immediately, while creating adds moderation and scheduling work.
Org affiliation does not change how the law treats you - authorities still pursue the individual, and member behaviour feeds back into the org's reputation with NPC groups.

Whether a group is open, application-based, closed, or invite-only.
One of six: Organization, Corporation, PMC, Faith, Syndicate or Club. A Syndicate or PMC label tells you a lot about expected legality before you read a word of the charter.
At most two of the fourteen tags (Bounty Hunting, Engineering, Exploration, Freelancing, Infiltration, Medical, Piracy, Resources, Scouting, Security, Smuggling, Social, Trading, Transport). If the pair does not match what you want to fly, keep looking.
Casual, Regular or Hardcore - the closest thing RSI has to a stated attendance expectation.
Exclusive orgs require you to list them as your primary organization and usually forbid other memberships. Check this before applying, not after.
The practical indicators that an advertised event will fit your schedule.
Event notices or current communication, not only historical member counts.
Concrete rules and activity focus rather than generic promises of every game loop.

When it goes wrong
Choose a readable variation that retains the identity; do not add confusing punctuation just to force availability.
Check the public recruitment status and application requirements, then contact only through channels the org explicitly lists.
Publish a recurring time, timezone, meeting point, and low-barrier event before adding more recruitment channels.
Update both or remove the stale link; the official page must remain a trustworthy entry point.
Reduce roles to current responsibilities and keep a small, accountable owner/admin group. Remember only four roles carry access - if you want to reward someone without giving them power, give them a rank instead.
You cannot have them. The form caps you at one primary and one secondary activity, so decide what the org is actually for and put the rest in the manifesto text.
That is the exclusive membership style doing its job. State it in the first line of your recruitment text, or switch to non-exclusive if you do not really need a single-roster group.
Org affiliation is not legal cover: security still pursues the individual, and repeated member crimes shift the org's standing with NPC factions. Write conduct rules that say which activities are sanctioned.

Decide whether to join or create
Start at the official RSI Organizations hub while signed in. Join when you need active events, mentors, and an established schedule; create only when you have a real niche or a core group ready to operate. Browse public pages, recent activity, charter tone, timezone, and recruitment status rather than choosing solely by member count.

Define the promise
Before opening the creation interface, write one sentence covering who the org is for, which activities it runs, and when it plays. For example, state lawful hauling in EU evenings instead of "all gameplay." A clear promise is visible on the public page and prevents recruits expecting PvP, roleplay, or daily events from being surprised later.

Create or apply through RSI
On the organization page, use Create for a new org or the Join/Apply control on an existing public page. Creation asks for a name, a SID, an archetype, up to two activities, a commitment level and a membership style. The archetype list is fixed at six options - Organization (the generic one), Corporation, PMC, Faith, Syndicate and Club - and every one of them changes how you appear in discovery filters. When applying, read whether the org is open, application-based, or invite-only and include a short relevant message.

Pick exactly two activities and an honest commitment level
RSI lets an org select at most two of fourteen activity tags, one primary and one secondary: Bounty Hunting, Engineering, Exploration, Freelancing, Infiltration, Medical, Piracy, Resources, Scouting, Security, Smuggling, Social, Trading and Transport. That is a hard cap, so the pair you pick is your entire advertised identity - "we do everything" is not an option the interface supports. Commitment is a three-way choice between Casual, Regular and Hardcore, and it is the field recruits actually read to decide whether your schedule will work for them.

Build the public page
Fill out the public history, manifesto, and charter in the website editor, then preview the page as a newcomer would see it. Publish activity focus, language, timezone, conduct expectations, and where events are announced. Keep rules concrete: explain how to join an event, how absences work, and what behavior causes removal.

Understand ranks versus roles before building a hierarchy
RSI separates two things that look similar. Ranks are decoration: an org can invent any rank ladder it likes and assign one rank per member, but a rank grants no rights whatsoever. Roles are the actual permission system and there are only four - Owner (can do anything including disbanding the org), Recruitment (send invites, accept or deny applicants), Officer (manage members, their roles and ranks, and moderate the org chat channel) and Marketing (edit the public appearance, official texts, history, manifesto and charter). Role titles can be renamed to fit your theme, and a member can hold any number of them. Give permissions only where someone has a real task, and avoid a long military rank ladder that no one can explain.

Choose exclusive or non-exclusive membership deliberately
Membership style is a single setting with real consequences. Exclusive means members must list your org as their primary organization and are commonly barred from joining others; non-exclusive lets them keep affiliations elsewhere. Exclusive suits a group that runs its own scheduled operations and wants a clear roster; non-exclusive suits a hobby, regional or activity-specific group whose members also fly with a main org. Say which one you chose on the public page, because being surprised by an exclusivity requirement after applying is a common reason people leave immediately.

Run a first repeatable event
Publish a two-hour beginner-friendly event with a meeting station, exact start time and timezone, required gear, ship needs, roles, and a fallback activity. At the event, use a party leader, confirm everyone is in the same shard, and end with a short feedback request. Consistent small events build trust faster than a polished page with no activity.
